Using Compost

Compost is a great way to improve pasture health and productivity.

·   Test soil to determine plant nutrient needs

·   Test compost to determine nutrient content.   Composted manure contains 0.2-2% of each of the major plant nutrients.  Specific levels depend on the source of the manure and how it has been stored.

·   Apply 1/4 to 1/2 inch at a time to your pasture during dry weather in the active growing season

·   Apply additional nutrients if indicated by soil and compost tests.  Manure from one horse generally provides sufficient phosphorus to meet the annual growing needs of an acre of grass.  However, you may need to apply supplemental nitrogen and micronutrients.
